They had been walking for half the night, and throughout the whole day. It was nearing dusk, the sun just visible at the horizon as Dayn and the children of Hayati reached the Suna village. This long trek had only been rushed once before in Dayn's lifetime. The heat was oppressive, and lakes grew and vanished in everyone's vision off in the distance. Under a normal circumstance, this journey was not difficult, but in the heat of combat, they had left with no thoughts of food or water. Dayn had scolded himself mentally several times throughout the day for not taking just a moment to at least get water.
He shifted the young girl who was passed out over his left shoulder. In the desert, with no water, the young with him were certainly having a hard time. The average age of the group was about 7 years old, but there were two 14 year olds who helped Dayn carry those who could not make the trip alone. Four of the dozen of them had collapsed, though luckily they were small and light enough it did not strain Dayn too much to carry two, one on each shoulder. The pace was what made it difficult, Dayn thought. He could easily have been to the village before now, but the children had limits much different than his own.
Youngest of a group of 4 that were in his age group, and the only one not yet of age to become an adult, leading the young to safety was his responsibility. Though he was stronger than the three others who were barely a year his elder, he had been reprimanded for attempting to fight alongside the others already. Rather than argue, which would take another Hayati out of the fight anyway, Dayn simply did what was expected of him.
With the end in sight, the group's pace increased drastically, anxious to get some water, and be out of the heat. They were stopped at the gate, and Dayn explained the situation. The guard nodded, trusting his story apparently with no proof, and gave the group water and directions through the village to the Hayati apartment.
As per the treaty between the Hayati and the Kazekage, one member of the Hayati clan remained at the village at all times, who would tell the rest of the clan to come if there were a war or something similar. Apparently the clan member stationed in the village had been assassinated the night before, and word of the assault of the clan was not a complete surprise. Someone had been targeting the clan.
Dayn remembered the feeling he had when the scream woke him the night before. He knew, deep down, it was big trouble. He had hoped he was wrong, convinced himself the feeling was nothing, but now it came crashing down.
Dayn waited patiently in the crowded apartment for some word of.. anything. It did not take long. Within half an hour there was a knock at the door, though Dayn was very surprised to find himself face to face with the Kage. Two hooded ninja were a couple steps behind him, apparently the Kage's escort. When asked, Dayn left the apartment with the Kazekage, to discuss matters. The two ninja waited outside the door, guarding the apartment from the next possible threat.
It was as he feared. The Kazekage described with as little detail as he could, of the result of the assault on the Hayati clan. The only good news was that there were a couple bodies that were missing, and he said there was a good chance they had escaped.
But unless anyone else showed up, which could not be a certainty, Dayn was the eldest and strongest of the clan, which made him the new leader. Dayn just stood there after the Kage had left. It was one thing to fear the fact, another to hear it actually had occurred.
It was nearly midnight when Dayn returned to the apartment. He had cried the rest of his tears in privacy, and felt drained from the events of the past 24 hours. He was glad everyone had already gone to sleep, most of them finding a place on the floor. Dayn felt no need to wake them for the news he had. It would be better to wait till morning..
Which came all too quick. The blaring sun shine through the windows woke Dayn, even with as tired and drained as he felt. If it weren't for the position he found himself in, he would have rolled over and made himself fall back asleep. The others were stirring as well. It would be best to just lay it out, Dayn thought. He was not good with emotions, and knew this would devastate them.
Things would never be the same, Dayn thought, as he pondered the future while the others reacted in their own ways. All had cried for a time. Out of tears, Dayn sat alone, looking out the window at the village. This would be their new home, at least for a while, Dayn decided. It was too dangerous to go back. They were just be slaughtered if they did. The village alert to more assassination attempts would be the safest place for his clan..[mod=1]
